THE SWITCH to SUCCESS

In 1990 a person named Jerry Sternin was working for Save The Children. The foundation mainly focussed on improving the lives of children who live in rural areas, some even tribals. The aim was to remove Malnutrition. He was posted to the office in Vietnam. It was an area with minimal development. 6 months after Sternins visit a whopping 65% of the children were properly nourished. He didn't bring a magic pill, nor did he overthrow the unsupportive government, he tapped into the subconscious state of the villagers' mind to be successful.

//representation purpose

The methods are from a book called SWITCH-By chip and dan heath

In the end, I will tell you how Sternindid that wondrous feat

To understand that you need to know the working of the human mind and decision-making center. For simplicity sake, we can divide it into the rider, and the elephant

Yep, you heard it right. The rider symbolizes the logical and analytical part of the brain. The elephant represents the emotional part. But it is more complicated than that.

1)The Rider

The rider is the part that says "you can delete that movie which you saw 10 times to save your computer's memory!".It is analytical and logical. But the problem-Its very pessimistic.-"The government is stupid!","I am too old for that"," My wife will make a fuss".It is an expert in bringing problems. And sometimes it is helpful but not every time.

The rider is a long term thinker. He is the one who realizes that you have risk of cholesterol and urges you to go jogging at 5 am.But you don't.And that is because of -

2)The elephant

The elephant makes you think"Oh but that movie is my favorite. Do not delete it."

It is highly emotional and goes after instant gratification. It says" Oh come on this bed is so good and soft and comfortable, So don't get up."But is also responsible for the dopamine surge and pride you get when you hear the national anthem. It is strong and the rider has to break its back to control the elephant.

The elephant in the short term winner. He makes you click those clickbait commercials of "LOSE FAT IN 1 WEEK!"

Those who can control their mind can easily control their life. This is why gathering control over this duo can make life many times better.

THE PROBLEM

The major problem of the rider is that he knows stuff ..too much. When you are off to the gym on your third day he says"But the traffic is a headache. You really think you can lose 10 pounds that easily?"He loves numbers, pie charts, and all those stuff.

What about the elephant? The elephant you make you motivated to go to the gym but loses hope and motivation too fast. A traffic jam or a small backache would be enough.

THE SOLUTION

So what is the solution? Here are those-

FOR THE RIDER

1)FIND THE BRIGHT SPOTS

Sternin found the group of children who were well-nourished in spite of the adverse conditions. He found that they were hand-fed and ate 4 times a day.

2)SCRIPT CRITICAL MOVES

Sternin gave clear cut instructions such as-Feed them 4 times a day, Try hand-feeding even if the child is sick, Feed them green grams

3)POINT TO THE DESTINATION

He pointed to the goal of making the whole village's children well-nourished

FOR THE ELEPHANT

1)FIND THE FEELING

He showed the undernourished kids' parents the well-nourished kids and instilled the need of seeing their kids like that.

2)SHRINK THE CHANGE

He made the steps very small and doable rather than the large scale improvements earlier officers suggested"Build 1000 toilets", "make more roads".

3)GROW YOUR PEOPLE

He made the well-nourished children's parents conduct live cooking classes and administered village meetings. As the movement gathered momentum 65% percent of the kids benefitted by 6 months.

THE CONCLUSION

This method can be adopted in all activities. Incorporating them into your daily routine will transform your entire life. Try it out soon. Switch off hardships and switch on good times.
